PRESS UPDATES MAY 2008

APRIL 2007

In April 2007,the informal activities which were going on for the last four years were formalized and structurised in the name of “SUNLIGHT CHILDREN”. We started coaching of students of English medium schools(Govt aided schools). About 70 students enrolled as detailed below.

Primary section- 10
Secondary section-60.

Coaching was done by about 35 volunteers, some of whom had teaching experience as well. Special attention was given to weaker students. Students ability to express themselves in English was greatly improved.

The academic year 2007-2008 has now come to an end and the results of each of the enrolled children has improved by almost 20%.

Activities other than academic.

1. Iskon supplies us with lunch and dinner. Every child is encouraged to have a balanced meal. This has contributed to their weight gain and improvement in general health.



2. Dr. R. Suchak took regular classes to promote personal hygiene in every child.

4. NCPA Congress celebrated the birthday of Hon. Minister Shri Sharad Pawar. The above organizations donated blackboards, mats, slates, white board marker pens, note books, dusters etc.

6. Cynthia Bredemeyer from south germany, who is studying in India, visited us to get an experience of social work.
   
   She taught the English alphabets to students studying in the Municipal schools within a week time. The students who took advantage of this are:- Babita, Sunita, Sugita, Shivkumar, Beena, Gita, Suman, Brinjan.


7. Resource volunteers took the children for picnics.
   
8. Ami Patel took VII std for picnic and Rajul Kotak took VIII std and IX to Nehru Planaterium.

YEAR 2003 - 2007

In the year 2003 Dr.surbhi suchak did general practice in her Chand Society Clinic. A poor woman from Vile-Parle started coming to her for regular anti-natal check ups. She was accompanied by her 3 daughters.

Reema and Seema went to the local Municipal school (juhugndhi-gram Municipal School-Hindi section). Dr.Suchak realized that both the girls did not know to read or to write. She started interacting with the girls regularly. She started with giving them sweets, chocolates telling them stories.The girls now started visiting the clinic regularly. They also started bringing their friends along. Now Dr. suchak, along with Chandani Mehta(resident of chand society) started teaching the children the Hindi Alpabets. The numbers of children increased and a few of Dr. suchak’s patients volunteered to come and teach, a few volunteered to give dry snacks occasionally, and a few handed down their old clothes which were in good condition. At the end of 2007 a group of about 100 children was formed.

   Anti-lice treatment and nail cutting of every child was done personally by Suchak and Suneeta Dixit once a week(help was taken from the older children of the group also)
   
5. Ganesh Utsav and Navrathri was also celebrated every year. Ganesh utsav is celebrated every year in an Eco-Friendly way. We use a marle statue of Ganeshji. We immerse it in a bucket of water, then take it out, wash it, dry it and store. The same is used every year.

Introduction to Sunlight Children

Sunlight Children is a community centre for underprivileged children, located in Juhu, Mumbai.
Run by Dr. Surbhi Suchak from her old clinic, the centre aims to provide free medical check-ups, medical supplements, primary education and free nutritious snacks to local financially and socially challenged children.
